Follow our guide on how to boost your WiFi in five very easy steps and start getting a faster connection to your wireless router today.
All of these tasks can be carried out at either no cost at all or with very minimal investment.
Select a perfect location for your router
Try to find the best location for your router. Rather than keeping the router on the floor, try positioning it in the open, free from walls and as much furniture as possible. Removing these obstacles will make your router’s job a bit easier. Also if your router has an antennae, make sure this is pointing upwards.
Isolate your router from other electronics
Try to keep your router away from other electrical devices such as televisions, speakers and phone chargers. Their electrical current can easily disrupt the wireless signal from your router.
Monitor who uses your WiFi
Keep an eye on who is using your router to access the internet. The more devices that are using your router, the more strain this will have on your router’s ability to provide a strong signal. If you do find devices connected to your router that aren’t yours, consider changing the password to your router.
Turbocharge your router
Modern routers come from the factory with very good specifications but older models can benefit from either a WiFi booster or repeater. A booster extends the range that the router has, whereas a repeater adds an additional signal using a separate mini-router. For those that enjoy a spot of DIY, you can even make your own WiFi booster!
Review your ISP
The speed of your internet as well as the quality of service varies entirely on which ISP (Internet Service Provider) you are with. Some providers also offer better coverage in certain areas so check with your neighbours to see who they recommend. Sometimes opting for the cheapest deal is a false economy.
Note – now that you’re downloading at a faster rate, don’t forget to keep an eye on your bandwidth usage. Many ISPs offer unlimited bandwidth but some will still have a monthly limit and charge you if you go over this.
