You’ve decided to go down the Content Management System road. There are hundreds of different Content Management Systems out there, each with their own pros and cons.
This page will hopefully explain what your typical options are and should help you decide which Content Management System is right for you. Please note that although there are eCommerce plugins available for WordPress and Joomla, this article will only compare the features for standard websites.
Joomla
One of our favourite Content Management Systems. This platform is ideally suited for someone with more experience with website management or for someone who is prepared to spend more time learning. Joomla is far more complicated to use than WordPress and doesn’t offer much more in the way of flexibility but is very secure and reliable.
WordPress
One of the most popular and, dare we say, best Content Management Systems around today. WordPress is amazingly easy to work with, as a developer/designer and also as a site owner. Even with little knowledge, you can pick up WordPress in a few hours. The options and plugins that are available for WordPress today are incredible.
WordPress did gain some bad press a few months ago with an internal script called TimThumb left the security on some websites compromised. This was fixed within a few hours and only required a simply update.
Custom-made CMS
Lots of web developers are now offering “custom made” Content Management Systems. The reality with these is that they’re nothing more than pre-made, rebranded systems. These are fine but typically offer less functionality than other CMS’s but are often designed with ease of use in mind.
